He had great technique and knew what constituted good art.

The interplay of positive and negative space, surface development and choice of clay body were important to my work when I was active years ago.

Comment on Call for applications: Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud (France) 2026 Exhibition by Bex https://www.ceramicsnow.org/news/call-for-applications-fondation-dentreprise-bernardaud-france-2026-exhibition/#comment-42669 Tue, 04 Nov 2025 18:28:22 +0000 https://www.ceramicsnow.org/?p=41743#comment-42669 In reply to Vasi Hirdo.

The fact that it’s perfectly possible to be a new voice and an emerging artist with a new perspective over the age of 40 is a very valid and important point ! Age restrictions are discriminatory by definition but the worst thing is the lack of understanding that it’s not always possible for everyone (particularly working class people, women and those from migrant and marginalised communities) to pursue an art practice as a first career so for some, starting a practice in their 50s means they’ll still be emerging in their 60s… This doesn’t mean their work isn’t interesting or valid.

This call is specifically aimed at supporting young and emerging artists. The age range is simply part of the eligibility criteria, not discrimination. Other opportunities (over 90% of the ones we promote) are open to everyone or may focus on mid-career and established artists, but this one is dedicated to encouraging new voices and perspectives.

Comment on Collecting in Context: The Fred Marer and Forrest L. Merrill Collections by Ray https://www.ceramicsnow.org/articles/collecting-in-context-the-fred-marer-and-forrest-l-merrill-collections/#comment-42173 Sat, 11 Oct 2025 22:02:33 +0000 https://www.ceramicsnow.org/?p=38489#comment-42173 I am Fred Marer’s step-grandson, and this article brought back many wonderful memories of growing up surrounded by these incredible pieces of art and artists. I’ll never forget exploring Fred and Mary’s apartment packed to the rafters with exquisite artworks stacked everywhere like cord-wood! I also vividly remember their hallway, with several of Jun Kaneko’s famous Sanbon Ashi works lining its length, being my playground, as it was the only open space in the apartment where a young boy could actually break into a run, or engage in my favorite thing to do there, running down the hall playing leapfrog over those now almost priceless works of art! Good thing I never broke anything! One of these years I would love to go to Scripps and visit the collection. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
